Frequently Asked Questions about Favicons
What is a favicon and why is it important?
A favicon (short for "favorite icon") is a small square icon that represents your website. It appears in browser tabs, history, the bookmarks bar, and Google search results on mobile devices. It is crucial for brand recognition (branding), improves user experience, and gives a professional look to your website.
Why download a .zip package instead of just a .ico?
Historically, only a favicon.ico file was needed. However, on the modern web, users save sites to their mobile home screens (iOS and Android), and browsers require higher resolutions. Our generator creates a site.webmanifest file for Android, touch icons for Apple (apple-touch-icon.png), and standard PNG sizes, ensuring your logo looks crisp on any device or Retina display.
What image format is best to upload?
We recommend uploading a PNG or SVG image with a transparent background. For best results, the image should be a perfect square (1:1 aspect ratio) and have a resolution of at least 512x512 pixels. Avoid uploading logos with a lot of text, as they will become unreadable when scaled down to the 16x16 pixel size of the browser tab.
